The Brief

What does a home look like when ancient Persian cooling meets bladeless wind turbines?

House of the Future is a project for a smart sustainable residence in the UAE. The challenge: design a home for extreme desert heat that minimises mechanical cooling. The solution combines four systems spanning 2,600 years: a Barjeel wind tower, a Yakhchāl underground ice chamber, bladeless wind energy turbines, and Phalanx heat-insulated facade panels.

The Approach

Four Systems. One Objective.

Each of the four climate systems solves the same problem from a different angle. The Barjeel wind tower is a traditional Persian wind-catcher: it catches prevailing wind at height and channels cooled air into the living spaces below. The Yakhchāl is an ancient Persian underground ice chamber: it uses the stable temperature of the earth to pre-cool incoming air. Together, these two passive systems deliver cooled air via ground ventilation grills without any mechanical input.

Bladeless wind turbines on the roof convert wind kinetic energy into electricity, supplying the small active loads that remain after passive cooling is maximised. Phalanx facade panels use a dual-layer evaporative cooling system to reduce heat absorption through the building envelope before it reaches the interior. A green roof mitigates the urban heat island effect, reducing the ambient temperature around the building and lowering the thermal load on the envelope.

The Result

A multi-level residence achieving year-round comfort with no mechanical cooling. The Barjeel–Yakhchāl passive chain delivers cooled air via ground ventilation grills.
